As someone who has committed a six offense, I have a duty to do what it takes to insure that I never harm anyone ever again. They say that someone who offends sexually can never be cured much in the same way as a drug addict. Now I believe that a cure means finding the means to ensure that you do not relapse. So in that way, someone who sexually offends can be cured like someone is a cured drug addict. I believe this to be a true statement. However, the difference is the after effects of a relapse. When it is drugs or some such then a relapse mostly only actually hurts the user, but if a sex offender relapses then, well, many lives can be destroyed. And accordingly the relapse of a sex offender is to be avoided at all costs. To me, this means if someone who has committed a sex offense has shown that he is not a willing participant for treatment, or that he has the tendencies of a pedophile, or in some way shows that he does not have the proper mindset that he should be handled either by effective monitoring, prison, or civil commitment. Someone who has committed a sex offense should be in treatment for the rest of his life willingly, much like an alcoholic. This should be a requirement of all people who are convicted of a sex offense. I am not necessarily for public notification except in regards to high risk offenders, but I do believe that sex offenses are not like other offenses and measures need to be taken.
I for one will do what it takes to make sure I never commit this crime ever again; and I will not stand by while someone else does it either; and, I will do all I can to make sure that it never happens to anyone ever again. That is my vow. Whether I do it as I can from in here or I one day get to do it from out there. I will not put myself in the position; I will use all of the supports that are available and I will be in recovery for the rest of my life. That is a small part of what I owe my kids.
